Three groups, one sunrise

Happy Sacred Sunday!

I kicked off my morning with a sunrise walk for my girlfriend’s birthday. It’s become a ritual of ours that we celebrate each of our trips around the sun with a walk to the sunrise.

When we arrived at our spot this morning, we found an unusual amount of people crowding by the water. We quickly learned that one group was there for a family who had lost loved ones last week.

Right next to them was a couple taking their wedding photos. The bride and groom all dressed up, with family and photographers capturing pictures just as the sun peeked over the horizon.

And then there was us three, celebrating my girlfriend’s 50th birthday.

It did not escape me that standing all side by side on the water there was:

• A group grieving the loss of life.

• A group starting a brand new life.

• A group celebrating one more year of life.

Same sunrise, serving us all in different ways.

Once again I remembered that this is life.

That’s what I’m talking about in my podcast today. How this moment in time, whether it’s happy, sad, extraordinary, or ordinary, is life. And we must live it right now, because it is all we are guaranteed.

My heart is broken for that family. The situation is unimaginable. And yet somehow they were there this morning, living the life they have, surrounded by people who love them, witnessing the sun rise again on one of their darkest mornings. That is an incredible lesson to all of us.

So whatever you’re doing on this Sacred Sunday, do it with intention, purpose, and perspective. Live the life you have now. Not the one you’re waiting for. Not the one you had. The one you have today.
